Snacks

Each family will be assigned to provide the food for the class for a particular week. This will occur three to five times during the school year, depending on the number of families in the class. (Parents of siblings in one class should expect to double the snack assignments.)

What to Bring

Spring Knolls tries to encourage the children to avoid junk food and eat food that is nutritious as well as tasty. The snack-bringing family should provide a snack consisting of two of the following three things:

  1. A protein source (such as cheese or peanut butter)
  2. A grain (such as crackers or bread)
  3. A fruit or vegetable.
Please also bring milk or juice and cups, napkins, spoons, bowls and extra cups if necessitated by snack.

Food suggestions

  • Dried fruit
  • Yogurt
  • Whole grain bread
  • Cheese
  • Finger vegetables
  • Raisins, seeds (not for 2s)
  • Fruit (no whole grapes for 2s)
  • Rice crackers
  • Nutritious crackers, muffins
  • Peanut butter and crackers
  • Cream cheese and jelly on bread
  • 100% juice (4-6 ounces per child)
  • Bring fresh, unopened packages and containers.
  • Partially used packages are unacceptable for health reasons.

  • Do NOT bring gum, candy, doughnuts, pastries, ice cream, chips, hot dogs, sugary drinks, or yogurt-covered nuts or raisins.
  • Do NOT bring popcorn, raisins, peanuts, carrot sticks, whole grapes, or seeds for 2s.

Teachers are encouraged to give feedback about snack items. They will let you know if a particular snack item is very popular with the class or not well received.

Food Allergies

Teachers usually will post a list of allergies to help you in planning snacks. Please be sensitive to children who have food allergies, i.e., allergies to nuts, wheat, peanut oil or dairy products.

Quantity

Bring enough food to provide snack for your child's class, the teacher, and the co-oping adults. You can usually determine this by counting the number of children on the class roster and adding 3 adults.

Missed Snack

The penalty for not bringing snack on a day assigned to you is $15.00 (to cover replacing the snack).

Birthdays

Teachers will recognize each child's birthday and make it special with activities that emphasize the happiness of the day and the uniqueness of the birthday child. If you wish to provide a special birthday treat on your child's birthday, please try to follow the nutritional suggestions listed above.

Spring Knolls Emergency Preparedness Guidelines

Procedures for Emergencies That Do Not Present a Direct Safety Threat to the Spring Knolls Community
  • School will remain open on a regular schedule, with normal classroom activities. Parents may pick up children early.
  • A teacher will remain with children whose parents cannot arrive in time for regular pick up. These parents should notify the school of their situation
  • Teachers will enact emergency procedures detailed below if the situation changes and children must remain in the school.

Procedures for Situations in Which It Could Be Unsafe to Be Outside

  • Teachers and co-opers/aides will keep children in a safe location within school. Depending on the situation, this could mean the classrooms, the gym, or another location in the church. (We have worked with the church and the afterschool program to coordinate storage of emergency supplies and determine safe places for children.)
  • If children are taken to an area out of the classrooms, teachers will assign co-opers/aides to take with them those emergency supplies not stored at emergency location.
  • Teachers will assign co-opers/aides to notify parents of fhe situation.
  • Teachers and co-opers/aides will do their best to provide a calm environment and maintain normal activities for the children, until it is safe and/or feasible for parents to come to school.

Notification of Parents

  • Once the school receives notification of an emergency, the teachers will immediately designate co-opers/aides from each class to notify parents of the situation, via telephone and e-mail.
  • The school will provide periodic updates to parents as the situation dictates.
  • Parents should not attempt to contact the school, either at the regular number or on the emergency cell phone, since the co-opers will be using every available phone to contact parents.

Picking Up Children

  • The school will maintain its regular schedule, including enrichment, on the day of an emergency.
  • Parents will be allowed to pick up children before normal dismissal time if an incident occurs during school hours, unless notified otherwise due to the nature of the emergency.
  • At least one teacher will remain with children whose parents are unable to get to school on time due to traffic or other circumstances related to the incident. The staff will try to arrange for emergency contacts to pick up children in this circumstance.

Daily Sign-in Procedures

When signing in their children, parents should write down any phone number (other than home/work/cell which we have in our records) at which we would be able to reach them during school hours on that particular day.

Emergency Supplies in Office or Church's Emergency Location

  • Bottled water and juice for each classroom for up to three-day period of confinement
  • Food for three-day period of confinement
  • Extra batteries for flashlights and radios
  • Candles
  • Matches
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Emergency kits in each classroom
  • 2 flashlights with batteries
  • Radio/boom box with batteries
  • First aid kit

Baby monitor from Rafael's room must go to emergency location in order to hear doorbell.

The school's emergency cell phone should also go to the emergency location.
